Yes, and it's an emergency. Raw yeast dough keeps rising in the stomach and produces alcohol as it does. Call your vet straight away if your dog or cat eats any.
Unbaked yeast dough, whether bread, pizza, rolls or sweet dough, does two kinds of harm. The warm, moist stomach makes it rise, which can stretch the stomach painfully and, in dogs, sometimes trigger bloat, where the stomach twists. At the same time, the yeast ferments the sugars and produces alcohol, which is absorbed into the blood. Dough left to rise on a worktop is a common target during holiday baking. Unbaked dough with no yeast doesn't rise, but it can still contain other dangerous ingredients such as raisins or chocolate.
A swollen, tight or painful belly, retching without bringing anything up, vomiting, drooling, restlessness, then wobbliness, weakness and drowsiness as the alcohol takes effect. Severe cases can lead to collapse, seizures or breathing problems.
Call your vet or a pet poison helpline immediately. Don't try to make your pet sick at home. Dough can form a sticky mass that's hard to bring up, and there's a risk of it being breathed in. Your vet may induce vomiting or wash out the stomach, and will usually give fluids and monitor blood sugar and temperature. If the stomach has twisted, emergency surgery is needed. Treated quickly, most pets recover well.
